Leadership Alamance

Leadership Alamance, a nine-month program, educates current and emerging leaders about Alamance County – its infrastructure, resources and challenges. During monthly field days, students become familiar with local history, government, educational institutions, criminal justice and public safety systems, health & human services, recreation and cultural arts programs, and our economic base. Leadership skills and community trusteeship are an integral part of the curriculum. In addition to growing in awareness and understanding of our community, class members develop valuable contacts and communication networks within the community.

The quality of the participants is the primary strength of the program. The selection committee seeks to identify those individuals most likely to utilize their leadership capacities in community service for the long term benefit of Alamance County. Participants are selected after consideration of their leadership achievements, community involvement, overall accomplishments, recommendations, and ability to assume expanded community responsibility. Each year approximately 35 diverse students who represent the corporate, nonprofit and civic sectors of Alamance County are selected to participate.

Students are required to devote a minimum of two days for a Fall retreat and the third Thursday of each month from September through May. Prior to each session, participants must complete a prerequisite. Before graduation day, class members are required to participate in a service learning project. Class members will determine their class project based on the project proposals received from area nonprofits. Participants must have the full support of their employer or sponsoring organizations. Those who are unable to make the entire time commitment should not apply. There is a tuition fee to participate ($825.00 for chamber members and $1025.00 for non-chamber members). This tuition covers the full cost of the program – transportation, meals and activities.
