Local School Systems
K-12


A number of education alternatives are available to school-age children in Alamance County. In addition to the public school system, selection ranges from charter schools, to non-public and independent schools.

The Alamance-Burlington School System provides quality public education to more than 22,500 students making it the fifteenth largest public school district in North Carolina. The system serves the entire county with twenty elementary schools, seven middle schools, seven high schools including a middle college option, and one alternative setting.

Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce
There are three Charter Schools located in Alamance County. Clover Garden School and River Mill Academy serve students grades K-12. The Hawbridge School serves student in grades 9-12. There are approximately 900 students enrolled in charter schools.

There are a number of non-public and independent school options available. They include Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and Burlington Day School serving students K-8. Alamance Christian School, Bible Wesleyan Church School, Burlington Christian Academy, and Friendship Christian School serve students in grades K-12. The Elon School serves students in grades 9-12.

Information for parents choosing to home school their children can be accessed through the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education.

Post Secondary


Opened in 1958, Alamance Community College has been a staple of education in the community. There are more than 6,000 students enrolled in curriculum programs such as biotechnology, culinary arts, medical assisting, nursing, automotive systems, air conditioning and college transfer courses. Also important are the adult high school, GED and basic skills programs, short-term classes for job skill development, continuing education classes, the Small Business Center, and college credit classes for high school students. 

Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce
Elon University, a nationally ranked four-year liberal arts college, has an enrollment of almost 5,000 students. With a student/faculty ration of 14:1, Elon offers 49 majors. Sixty-four percent of recent graduates participated in at least one study abroad program while at Elon. Eighty-nine percent of Elon’s students engage in service learning and 78% participate in internships creating a positive impact on our nonprofit and business community.

Several major public and private universities are within easy driving distance including Duke University, NC A&T, NC State University, North Carolina Central University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC-Greensboro, and Wake Forest University.
