Water Usage:

Those serviced by the City of Graham and the City of Mebane for water and wastewater are now back at their regular and complete levels of service. All industrial water usage that was previously limited is restored to normal usage levels.

Water Collection – CONCLUDED:

The Alamance Chamber is no longer collecting water for distribution in Mebane.

July 9, 2025

City of Mebane Water Usage:

  • Due to the emergency water shortage in Mebane, the city is currently under Stage V mandatory water rationing. The Graham-Mebane Water Treatment Plant remains down following flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal and there are less than 2 days of drinking water available.
  • All businesses in Mebane have been instructed to cease operations until further notice.

July 8, 2025

City of Mebane Water Usage Updates:

Tropical Storm Chantal has affected water treatment capacity for the Graham-Mebane Water treatment facility. Those industries serviced by either City of Graham or City of Mebane are asked to operate as zero or near-zero water usage again today. Unfortunately, there is not a current timeline for when the water treatment facility will be back online. City engineers are working diligently to restore this service and reduced water demand will aid in this restoration.

July 7. 2025

City of Mebane Water Usage:

The recent Tropical Storm Chantal weather event has resulted in initial flash flooding, with flooding continuing to occur in places, and several locations experiencing power outages. This includes the Graham–Mebane Water Treatment Plant. The Water Treatment Plant has been inundated with flooding from Graham–Mebane Lake and connecting tributaries, resulting in the plant being unable to operate. As a result, the Cities of Mebane and Graham will be activating their mutual assistance agreements with the Orange-Alamance Water Authority and the City of Burlington to serve Mebane citizens and utility customers during this interim phase until the Graham–Mebane Water Treatment Plant regains the ability to operate safely. These entities follow the same safe drinking water treatment guidelines as our water treatment plant.

  • In the meantime, we ask that customers conserve water during this interim phase, as operations cannot be conducted at normal water usage amounts. Specifically, we ask industries not to operate while the Graham–Mebane Water Treatment Plant is not operating. Also, we ask that businesses that do not provide essential services remain closed to reduce water usage further.
  • Finally, we request that all residential units only use water for essential usage. These efforts are being made to assist the City in keeping the water system operational, at least at a low-pressure level of service.
  • In addition, please be aware that the transfer of water supply will create a pressure drop within the Mebane water system. Also, the potential for discoloration and turbidity within water lines will occur with the changeover and redirection from the connection to new water systems.
  • City services such as the Mebane Fire Department and Public Utilities are aware of this change and will continue to provide service during this interim phase. Please be aware that there is no estimate on a time frame for when the Graham–Mebane Water Treatment Plant will be fully operational again.
  • Please remember to contact 911 in the event of emergencies related to this specific situation. As usual, call 911 for all other emergencies.
  • Finally, first responders will remain in place to assist during this event. The City’s social media accounts will provide updates as new information becomes available.

City of Graham Water Usage:

Tropical Storm Chantal has resulted in initial flash flooding, with further flooding continuing to occur in some areas, and several locations experiencing power outages. This includes the Graham-Mebane Water Treatment Plant. The Water Treatment Plant has been inundated with flooding from Graham-Mebane Lake and its connecting tributaries, resulting in the plant’s inability to operate. As a result, the Cities of Graham and Mebane will activate their mutual assistance agreements with the City of Burlington and the Orange-Alamance Water Authority to serve Graham citizens during this interim phase until the Graham-Mebane Water Treatment Plant regains the ability to operate safely.

  • In the meantime, we would like to ask that customers conserve water during this interim phase, since operations cannot be conducted at normal water usage amounts.
  • We request that all residential units only use water for essential purposes. These efforts are being made to assist the City in keeping the water system operational, at least at a low-pressure level of service. Additionally, please note that the transfer of water supply will result in a pressure drop within the Graham water system, and the potential for discoloration and turbidity in water lines will occur during the changeover and redirection from the connection to the new water system. Please be aware that there is no estimate on a time frame for when the Graham-Mebane Water Treatment Plant will be fully operational.
